Causes of erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is not just either/or, there are many variations and the cause can be as complex as it can be simple. It’s rare that it’s just physical, or it’s “just” mental blockages.

Erectile dysfunction can be a sign of hidden cardiovascular disease or other serious illnesses, and other times, it’s more of a mental issue. The challenges are also often seen as a result of surgery, large amounts of medication or stress. Therefore, erectile dysfunction needs to be taken seriously from the start.

I help you find the cause and translate it into an effective shockwave treatment plan, emtt and the essential counseling that gets you back on your feet. So you don’t waste time or lose the relationship.

I am an internationally recognized trainer and specialist in shockwave and erectile dysfunction exercises and have helped thousands of men improve their erections and quality of life since 2017. At the same time, I’m also a sexologist and can help with the psychological aspects of erectile dysfunction.

Evidence of efficacy with the clinic's treatment method (average)

“Despite regular exercise, a healthy diet and a continued active sex life, throughout my fifties I have experienced a gradual deterioration in my ability to have a proper and sustained erection. Well, in reality, that process probably started even earlier.

I’ve never really liked pills, even though they provide an easy and effective short-term effect. I became curious when I read about Michael and MS Insight. I took the test and gave myself a birthday present by purchasing what in my case were 6 recommended treatments.

You quickly get used to the formless and in no way painful shockwave treatment of the perineum and penis. The treatment is painless and you quickly get used to relaxing with the “tingling” waves from the shockwave machine.

You can convince yourself that there’s not much difference between opening your mouth and dropping your pants in private with your therapist. Then the experience is on par with a dental cleaning. Michael is very organized and has always handled my treatments and one-on-one sessions in a good and relaxed manner.

After my 6 treatments, I experienced a noticeable change in both the ability to get and the frequency of having a naturally good erection. Cozy when you wake up in the morning and nice when you’re with your girlfriend.

It’s been worth every penny for me and I wouldn’t mind going back in 5 or 10 years if I later lose the level that I have now regained.”

It’s important that you feel confident that you can benefit from the treatment offered, which is why I continuously track the development of the treatment over time. And more data is constantly being added.

This means that I am very aware of the development you can expect based on the erectile dysfunction you have. The long-term effect depends on how severe your erectile dysfunction is and what factors from your general lifestyle come into play. I will guide you, and if you listen and take action, you will be able to develop better than average.

For the milder issues, you will typically see an effect from a course of treatment lasting up to a couple of years, provided you do not make drastic negative lifestyle changes.

For more severe erectile dysfunction, a positive effect will also be seen in the first 6-12 months before there is a slight decrease in the function achieved, but this can be maintained on an ongoing basis with individual treatments. Again, it depends on the situation and lifestyle. If it changes in a positive direction along with the treatment, the results will also last longer.

In short, regardless of the degree of erectile dysfunction, the clinic’s data and the studies conducted over the last 10 years show that shockwave is an effective alternative or supplement to erectile dysfunction exercises. I am currently the only one in Denmark to continuously document my results to strengthen treatment solutions for men with erectile dysfunction.

Exercises for erectile dysfunction

Getting a good start with your pelvic floor exercises is crucial to achieve the best results with erectile dysfunction. It’s all about gaining proper control over the relevant muscles, so it’s important to start with a precise technique in erectile dysfunction exercises.

Basic technique: Squeeze the rectal opening as if you were holding a fart. This squeeze activates the pelvic floor muscles needed to improve erectile function. You will probably also feel the squeeze at the front of the penis root. When you squat, avoid tensing your stomach, buttocks or thighs, and don’t hold your breath. This is where most people make mistakes in training, which can reduce the effectiveness of the exercises.

Exercise 1 Quick squeeze: Lie on your back with your knees slightly apart so you are relaxed and can focus on using the right muscles. Squeeze quickly and forcefully and release the squeeze. Repeat the exercise 10-20 times. Each squeeze should be short and sharp, as if you want to quickly close and open a door. This trains your ability to quickly activate the pelvic floor muscles, which is important for both control and strength.

Exercise 2 Moderate squeeze with hold: Now squeeze moderately, as if you are half holding a fart. Hold the squeeze for 5-10 seconds and then release. The pause between squeezes should be at least as long as the squeeze so that the muscles are not fatigued too quickly. Repeat the exercise 10-20 times. This exercise is designed to increase the endurance of the pelvic floor so you can hold the tension longer without getting tired.

Exercise 3 Long squat: Try to hold a moderate squat for up to 1 minute or as long as you can without tensing other muscles or holding your breath. Start slowly and gradually build up so you can extend the duration of the squeeze. This will help you build long-term muscle control, which is necessary to maintain an erection over time.

Exercise 4 Strong squeeze with slow release: Finish with 5-10 strong squeezes. Squeeze as hard as you possibly can, as if you are trying to close a very tight seal. Release slowly again over about 3 seconds. Remember to take breaks between each squeeze to give your muscles time to recover. This exercise trains maximum pelvic floor strength, which can improve overall function and response in situations that require maximum muscle effort.

By following these steps and doing erectile dysfunction exercises regularly, you will gradually build strength and endurance in your pelvic floor, which can have a positive effect on your erectile function. If you are unsure whether you are doing the exercises correctly or if you need further guidance, you are always welcome to contact me. I can help you fine-tune your technique and ensure you get the most out of your erectile dysfunction exercises.

Initial consultation and first treatment with erectile dysfunction exercises

Before treatment, you will receive a detailed questionnaire about your erectile function and general health, which will form the basis for further examinations at the clinic. If further information is needed, I will call you before you come.

At the first consultation, which takes about 70 minutes, we have an in-depth conversation about your situation, a thorough physical examination of the area, advanced ultrasound scans, and the first treatment.

Once we’ve done the in-depth examination and found the cause of your erectile dysfunction, we’ll go through it together and create a plan to help you with your erectile function. That way, you’ll regain a high quality of life and worry-free sex. Then you’ll get your first treatment with shockwave and EMTT, so we’re off and running and you can get your erection back.

The first examination takes place at the clinic at Eliasgade 10b, 2300 KBH S in cozy, safe and calm surroundings.

Shockwave is not a miracle cure and you should also expect to have to actively work on your lifestyle and do erectile dysfunction exercises – otherwise all therapies will be pure symptom management, including the blue pill.

When you come for your first consultation, we start with a thorough conversation where we talk openly about your challenges and the lifestyle factors that may affect your erectile function in a safe and confidential environment. Together, we will uncover whether your erectile dysfunction is constant or more situational, which gives us important insights into the underlying causes. I recommend that your doctor is also part of the process to make sure that all blood values are normal and that any comorbidities such as diabetes or heart problems are under control.

As part of the initial examination, I perform an ultrasound scan of both the penis and pelvic floor to assess blood flow and muscle balance in these areas. This scan allows us to identify any physical causes of your erectile dysfunction, such as reduced blood flow or pelvic floor tension. In addition, I’ll perform a brief screening of your heart’s pumping function to ensure your heart is functioning optimally, as cardiovascular health plays a key role in erectile function. If necessary, we can also examine the prostate and bladder to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

To get a full understanding of your body’s health, I perform an advanced body analysis with the clinic’s Inbody770 system. This analysis provides detailed information about your body composition, including muscle mass, body fat percentage, and visceral fat. This data helps us assess your overall health and predict how your body will respond to the planned treatment. At the same time, I also examine your back to see if it can have an impact on erectile function.

After the initial examination, you will receive guidance on pelvic floor exercises to improve your muscle strength and support the treatment. Together we will discuss your expectations for the treatment and create a tailored plan for your treatment, so you can feel comfortable and well-informed every step of the way. If you wish, we can also start shockwave and EMTT treatment at your first consultation, so you can quickly get started on improving your erectile function.

I make sure we implement the right treatment strategy for you so you can experience quality in your sex life again. I go in-depth with your treatment because you deserve the best possible solution to your erectile dysfunction. If adjustments to your diet and lifestyle are needed, I work with external partners, including nutritionists and personal trainers, to give you the best possible support and ensure that all aspects of erectile dysfunction are addressed and that your ED exercises are complemented by other treatments.

Ultrasound scanning is a key part of my initial examination because it allows me to precisely target treatment to your specific needs. The ultrasound allows me to examine several different aspects of your health that are crucial to understanding the causes of your erectile dysfunction.

By analyzing the blood flow in the erectile tissue, I can assess whether there is sufficient blood supply to achieve and maintain an erection. The ultrasound scan also allows me to identify the presence of calcium deposits, fat or plaque, which can affect the function of blood vessels and thus affect your erectile function. At the same time, I assess the control of your pelvic floor, as impaired pelvic floor function can be a contributing factor to erectile dysfunction.

In addition, I look at your heart function and prostate, which is important to identify any underlying risk factors that may affect your sexual health. For example, heart problems or an enlarged prostate can have a direct impact on erectile dysfunction, and by including these in the examination, I get a full picture of the potential causes of your erectile dysfunction

With the latest and most advanced ultrasound equipment from Sonosite, I ensure an accurate and detailed assessment of your situation. This equipment gives me the highest quality images, which is essential for an accurate diagnosis. I am one of the few in the Nordics to offer such comprehensive ultrasound scans specifically targeting erectile dysfunction. My years of experience and specialization in the field allow me to interpret these images with great precision and turn them into a concrete and effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.

By choosing this thorough examination, you can be sure that I take all relevant factors into account, giving me the best chance of achieving a positive treatment outcome. Your health and quality of life are my top priority and I am committed to providing you with the best possible treatment based on the most accurate and comprehensive information about your condition.

The Shockwave treatment stimulates the formation of new blood vessels in the penis and improves blood flow, giving you a stronger and more lasting erection – with no unpleasant side effects. The course usually lasts 6-8 weeks and is customized to your needs and wishes for your sex life. My goal is for you to regain a high quality of life and boost your self-esteem.

A typical course of treatment consists of 6, 9 or 12 sessions and 85% of my clients experience a noticeable improvement. In cases of serious illness or medication, maintenance may be necessary, which I will advise you about during your first consultation after we have done the thorough examination, we will clarify what triggers your problems so that you can also work with different tools yourself. New research shows that an additional course of treatment after 6 months can significantly prolong the effect. Some people choose regular maintenance to maintain a high level of nerve activity.

The price for a single treatment with shockwave and double EMTT is between DKK 1,500-2,000, depending on which treatment solution you choose. I was the first in Denmark to combine these technologies, setting a new standard for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. At the first consultation, you can choose whether you only want a conversation and examination or if you want to start treatment right away. Therefore, the clinic’s offer cannot be compared to other places. Neither in terms of price nor effect.

The focused shockwave erectile dysfunction treatment is an advanced method where the perineum and penis are treated with focused shockwaves. Shockwave works on a biological level in the cells to increase blood flow and stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, which is essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy and strong erection. An additional benefit of shockwave therapy is that it loosens tense muscles in the pelvic floor, which can have a significant positive effect on blood flow to the penis. This combination of increased blood circulation and muscle relaxation provides a more natural and effective solution to erectile dysfunction.

The treatment itself lasts approximately 20-30 minutes and is designed to be as gentle as possible. The treatment is painless and most patients only experience a slight tingling in the treated area, which is a sign that the treatment is working. There are no risks or side effects associated with this treatment, making it a safe choice for men of all ages who experience erectile dysfunction. To ensure your comfort and peace of mind, you are welcome to bring your partner along for the treatment. Many couples find that this creates a supportive and trusting atmosphere, which can help improve the results of the treatment.

I always combine shockwave with EMTT (electromagnetic transduction therapy), a technology that significantly increases the formation of new blood vessels and improves stimulation of the nerve pathways around the pelvic floor. This combination provides a more powerful effect, which can be particularly beneficial for patients with more severe erectile dysfunction, diabetes or on heavy medication. This is why ED PLUS is the clinic’s standard treatment. Here you get double the effect compared to what you will see at other clinics.

Executive treatment goes one step further by not only focusing on the vascular part of erectile dysfunction and the pelvic floor, but also by integrating treatment of the entire central nervous system. This means that we work to improve the quality of nerve signals to the penis throughout the central nervous system, which can lead to a more stable and lasting erection. This approach is especially effective for those who have erectile dysfunction as a result of neurological challenges, cancer surgery or stress and depression.

Based on the initial examination, I will guide you on which treatment solution is best for you. My goal is to create a customized treatment plan that addresses not only the symptoms, but also the root causes of your challenges.

By combining the shockwave treatment with EMTT technology, we achieve a more comprehensive stimulation of both tissue and nervous system, resulting in a stronger and more sustained erection. This effect is because EMTT technology not only increases tissue elasticity, but also increases the release of growth factors, which are essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy erection, compared to shockwave alone. The growth factors contribute to the repair and formation of new blood vessels, which improves blood flow to the penis and strengthens your erection.

The combination treatment has proven to be significantly more effective than shockwave therapy alone. My clients report significantly better results, such as faster improvement, longer duration of effect and an overall increase in their sexual satisfaction. This advanced method offers hope to those who have previously had limited treatment options and can make a real difference to their quality of life.

I expect this combination of shockwave and EMTT to become the standard for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the future as it represents a significant advance in the field. I was the first to introduce EMTT in Denmark in 2020 and am one of the world’s leading and most experienced in EMTT treatment. I take pride in leading the way to deliver the best possible treatment to my clients, and I look forward to helping more men restore their sexual health and confidence.

After prostate cancer surgery, erectile dysfunction is unfortunately a common challenge, but fortunately there is hope for improvement. When the nerve tissue around the prostate is preserved during surgery, shockwave therapy and EMTT can play a crucial role in restoring erectile function in the first year after surgery. This treatment can often be combined with medication or injections to optimize results and help you maintain satisfactory sexual function.

It is crucial to start treatment as soon as possible after surgery, ideally within the first 6 months, as this window of time offers the best chances of success. Early treatment not only helps to stimulate the nerve tissue and swelling limbs, but also to reduce the risk of inappropriate scar tissue formation in the pelvic floor and reduce incontinence. In my experience, the biggest improvements are seen in those who start treatment soon after surgery, which increases the chances of regaining good erectile ability and function.

Shockwave therapy has now also been introduced at Odense University Hospital, where, as in my clinic, they have observed an increased effect on nerve tissue regeneration. They have started treatment as early as three weeks after surgery, provided that all cancerous tissue has been removed. Although early treatment gives the best results, I also see positive effects in clients who start treatment several years after their surgery, but this will require a more specialized approach

When doing your erectile dysfunction exercises, especially your squat, it’s crucial that the squat feels like a lifting, contracting or closing sensation. It should be like when you’re trying to hold in urine, having a bowel movement, or trying to hold in feces or a fart. It’s important to note that a proper squat shouldn’t feel like you’re pushing downwards, like when you’re trying to empty your bowels. This difference is key to ensure that you are activating the right muscles in the pelvic floor.

To help you determine if you’re pinching correctly, there are three simple methods you can use to test it:

  • Try stopping the urine stream: When you’re urinating, try stopping the stream of urine midway. This is a quick and easy way to test your pelvic floor muscles. However, it’s best to try this at the end of urination when the pressure isn’t as high, making it easier to control the squeeze. If you can stop the stream of urine, it’s a sign that you are squeezing correctly.
  • Feel your perineum: Lie on your back with your legs bent and your feet flat on the floor. Place a few fingers on the perineum, the area between the testicles and rectum. Apply light upward pressure with your fingers and pinch. If the area under your fingers becomes hard, it’s a good sign that you’re activating the right muscles and squeezing correctly.
  • Test with your little finger in the rectum: Lie on your side with your legs bent and gently insert your little finger into your rectum as if you were using a thermometer. Pinch and feel how a ring of muscle tightens around your finger. This is the outer sphincter. A little deeper in, you will feel a loop of muscles pushing the finger forward towards the pubic bone. When you release the pinch, you should feel the muscles become relaxed and soft again. This test gives you an accurate sense of what a proper pinch feels like and helps ensure you’re training the right muscles.

These methods are designed to give you confidence in your training by ensuring you activate the right muscles in your pelvic floor. Proper pelvic floor training can play an important role in improving your erectile function and overall sexual health. If you’re unsure if you’re pinching correctly, you’re always welcome to seek guidance in the clinic where I can help you fine-tune your technique and ensure you get the most out of your training.

I want to help you get started with your pelvic floor training here at the clinic, as I often find that many men have lost control of their pelvic floor muscles and use the large muscles in the buttocks instead. This is not uncommon, but it’s crucial to activate the right muscles from the start to avoid spending time and energy on “useless” training that doesn’t produce the desired results. To make sure you’re activating the right muscles correctly, I offer ultrasound scanning during training. This way we can see live if you are performing the exercises correctly and adjust the technique if necessary.

When training your pelvic floor, it’s important to learn how to ‘squeeze’ the muscles, which means to tighten the pelvic floor. A proper squeeze can be recognized by the root of the penis tilting and the rectal opening constricting, like when you try to hold back a fart. This muscle tension is essential for strengthening the pelvic floor and improving your erection.

When you squeeze, you’ll often feel it most around the rectal opening, as the muscles are fullest and most noticeable here. Part of the pelvic floor musculature consists of a sphincter around the rectum, which helps to close the outer part of the opening. This is a natural reflex that we use to strengthen the entire pelvic floor.

When you squeeze correctly, the pelvic floor will lift up slightly, pulling both the urethra and rectum forward towards the pubic bone. This movement creates a ‘kink’ in the urethra and rectum, effectively closing them off. This is the mechanism that helps control both urine and feces and is essential for a healthy and well-functioning pelvic floor.

By exercising these muscles regularly, you can gain better control over your pelvic floor, which can not only improve your erection, but also your overall pelvic function.

Getting a good start with your pelvic floor exercises is crucial to achieve the best results for erectile dysfunction. It’s all about gaining proper control over the relevant muscles, which is why it’s important to start with a precise technique.

Exercise 2 Moderate squeeze with hold: Now squeeze moderately as if you are half holding a fart.

By following these steps and exercises regularly, you will gradually build strength and endurance in your pelvic floor, which can have a positive effect on your erectile function. If you are unsure whether you are doing the exercises correctly or if you need further guidance, you are always welcome to contact me. I can help you fine-tune your technique and ensure you get the most out of your training.

Your self-esteem plays a crucial role in your ability to achieve and maintain an erection. When self-esteem is low, it can lead to feelings of shame, performance anxiety, and in the worst case scenario, depression and stress. These negative feelings can greatly affect your desire for sex and ability to get an erection, creating a vicious cycle where each failed sexual experience further degrades your self-image and exacerbates the problem.

As a sexologist, I understand how closely linked self-esteem and sexual function are, which is why I offer a holistic approach to treatment. Along with shockwave therapy, which physically improves your erectile function, I also help you rebuild your self-esteem. We work on the psychological aspects that may underlie your challenges and I support you in developing a healthier attitude towards yourself and your sexuality.

If you’re open to it, together we will explore the thought patterns and feelings that may be inhibiting your sexual performance. This may include working with performance anxiety, processing past negative experiences or developing new strategies to manage stress and expectations. As a sexologist, I will guide you through this process and help you break the cycle so you can achieve more satisfying and successful sexual functioning.

By combining physical treatment with my expertise as a sexologist, we can not only improve your erectile function, but also boost your self-esteem and overall wellbeing. This holistic approach ensures you get the best possible treatment, treating not only the symptoms but also the underlying causes of your challenges.

Performance anxiety is one of the most common challenges that can inhibit erectile function, especially when you feel pressure to live up to high expectations from your partner. Thoughts like “Am I good enough?”, “Is my penis big enough?” and “Can I satisfy her?” can quickly lead to stress (activation of the body’s fight, flight and freeze) and insecurity, which directly affects your ability to get and maintain an erection. These concerns can create a vicious cycle where the fear of failure leads to the very problems you fear the most.

As a sexologist, I have extensive experience helping men who experience performance anxiety and I understand how paralyzing these thoughts can be. Together, we will work to identify the specific concerns underlying your anxiety and I will help you develop strategies to manage and overcome these feelings. This may include techniques to reduce stress, change negative thought patterns, and build confidence in your sexual relationship.

My goal is to give you the tools to break the negative spiral of performance anxiety so you can regain control of your sex life. I will help you understand that your value lies not only in your sexual performance, but also in your ability to be present, empathetic and attentive to your partner. By working with both the psychological and emotional aspects of performance anxiety, together we can create a more relaxed and fulfilling sexual experience where you feel free to be yourself without fear of judgment.

By combining my expertise as a sexologist with an understanding of the complex emotions that can affect your erectile function, we can create a solid platform to improve both your confidence and your sexual health.

Erectile dysfunction can have many causes, and it’s not just age that plays a role. With me, you will receive a thorough and individualized examination to help identify the specific factors that affect your erectile function. Understanding the causes can vary depending on your age, and I take your life stage into account as we work together to find the best solution.

Age 20-40 years

Between the ages of 20-40, erectile dysfunction can often be linked to lifestyle and psychological factors. Stress from career building, studies, or financial challenges can lead to performance anxiety and low self-esteem, which can affect erectile function. Lifestyle choices such as obesity, physical inactivity, and the use of alcohol or drugs, including steroids, can also have a significant impact. In addition, trauma or negative sexual experiences from the past can play a role, and relationship problems can lead to low sex drive and erectile dysfunction. It’s important to take the problem seriously early on as it can prevent long-term consequences for your self-esteem and sexual health.

Age 40-60 years

Between the ages of 40-60, physical factors often become more prominent, although psychological causes can still play a big role. Medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart problems become more common and can affect blood flow to the penis, which is crucial for a good erection. Certain medications, such as cholesterol or blood pressure medications, can also have side effects that affect erectile function. Physical inactivity, obesity, and smoking further exacerbate these problems.

In addition, stress from work, family life or finances can still be a factor, as can lack of sleep and increased alcohol consumption. For many men in this age group, it’s also relevant to consider if there are any overstretched pelvic floor muscles, especially if they are active cyclists.

Age over 60 years old

In men over the age of 60, erectile dysfunction is often the result of a combination of aging and chronic diseases. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and neurological problems, such as nerve damage after prostate surgery, are more common and can have a direct impact on erectile function. Medication use is also often higher in this age group, which can cause side effects that affect sexual function.

Physical inactivity and obesity can worsen erectile dysfunction, and alcohol and tobacco use can further aggravate the condition. At the same time, performance anxiety and concerns about changes in sexual function with age can also have a psychological impact. Especially when intimacy is challenged around retirement age and the body really starts to change.

Generally speaking, about erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction affects around 50% of men over 50, but it can affect men of any age. It’s important to address the issue regardless of your age, and I’ll help you understand and overcome the challenges you face. By combining my expertise as a sexologist with a thorough clinical assessment, together we can find the most effective treatment plan for you. It’s never too early – or too late – to take control of your sexual health.

To give you a full picture of your health and identify potential risk factors, I offer an advanced body analysis with the InBody770 at your first treatment. This technology is among the most accurate and comprehensive tools for measuring body composition and provides valuable insights that can improve your treatment plan.

InBody770 analyzes several important parameters, including your body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat (fat around the organs), and even the fluid content of your body. This detailed analysis gives us a clear picture of how your body is built and helps predict how you will respond to the shockwave treatment. By knowing the exact composition of your body, we can tailor the treatment to your specific needs and ensure you get the best possible results.

In addition to optimizing your treatment, InBody770 analysis can also be used to track your progress over time. If you decide to make lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet or increasing physical activity, we can track your body composition and see how these changes affect your erectile function and overall health. Follow-up measurements after treatment allow us to evaluate the effects of treatment and adjust your plan as needed so you can continue to improve your health and quality of life.

By including this advanced body analysis in your treatment, we ensure that all aspects of your health are taken into account. This holistic view of your body and health helps us find the underlying causes of your challenges and develop an effective and personalized plan that focuses not only on symptoms, but also on long-term health and wellness.

It’s been worth every penny for me and I’m willing to go again in 5 or 10 years if I later lose the level that I have now regained.”
