Causes of erectile dysfunction and can it be helped by MS Insight?
Travel problems – an individual approach to your situation
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by many different factors, and it’s far from just a matter of age. When you come to me, you’ll receive a thorough and personalized examination where we identify the specific causes that affect your erectile function. As the challenges can vary depending on your life stage, I always take your age and life situation into account to find the most effective solution together with you.
Men aged 20-40 years
In this age group, erectile dysfunction is often caused by lifestyle factors and psychological stresses. Stress from studies, career building or financial challenges can lead to performance anxiety and low self-esteem, which affects erection. In addition, unhealthy lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, alcohol consumption and drug use (including steroids) can play a significant role. Past sexual trauma or relationship challenges can also affect sex drive. It’s important to take these issues seriously early on so they don’t develop into ongoing challenges.
Men aged 40-60 years
From the age of 40 onwards, physical factors become more dominant, although psychological causes can still be crucial. Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems can impair blood circulation, which is essential for a good erection. Certain medications, such as those used to treat blood pressure and cholesterol, can also have negative side effects. In addition, being overweight, smoking, lack of exercise and poor sleep habits can worsen the situation. Stress from work and family life continues to play a role, and for some men, pelvic floor tension, especially in cyclists, can be a factor.
Men over 60 years old
In men over the age of 60, erectile dysfunction is often caused by a combination of aging, chronic diseases and medication use. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurological disorders – such as nerve damage after prostate surgery – can directly affect erectile function. Many men of this age take medications that can have side effects that inhibit sexual function. At the same time, the psychological impact of aging, identity changes and retirement can contribute to performance anxiety and sexual challenges.
It’s never too early – or too late – to address the problem
Erectile dysfunction affects about half of all men over 50, but can occur at any age. The most important thing is to address the problem in time. I combine my expertise as a sexologist with a thorough physical examination, ECG and ultrasound scan of the penis and blood flow so that together we can tailor the most effective treatment. With shockwave, EMTT and relevant lifestyle changes, we can improve your erection – whatever your age. I also recommend that your doctor is part of the process to ensure that your blood values are normal and that any comorbidities such as diabetes or heart problems are properly managed.
What are peyronies / crooked penis / curvature of the penis?
Peyronie’s disease, also known as crooked penis, is a condition where fibrous scar tissue (plaque) forms in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. This leads to a curvature or bending of the penis during erection, which can vary in severity and in some cases cause pain during intercourse.
Causes and development:
The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is not fully understood, but it is thought to be due to repeated minor injuries to the penis that lead to the formation of scar tissue. Only about 10% of cases resolve on their own without treatment. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the harder it can be to achieve improvement.
Symptoms:
- Curvature of the penis during erection
- Pain during erection or intercourse
- Penis abbreviation
- Palpable hard areas (plaque) in the penis
Diagnosis
An accurate diagnosis requires a detailed ultrasound scan of the penis to reveal the degree and location of fibrosis/plaque. This scan is essential to ensure that subsequent treatment is directed to the correct areas.
Treatment options:
Several treatment methods can be considered:
Focused shockwave: This method can reduce inflammation, decrease curvature and improve erectile function without unpleasant side effects or the need for surgery.
Exercises and techniques: Specific exercises can support treatment and improve results.
Early intervention is crucial to achieve the best results and prevent further deterioration of the condition. If you notice symptoms of Peyronie’s disease, it is recommended to seek professional help as soon as possible.
I help you find the right solution for crooked penis/peyronies in the clinic.
Combination therapy with EMTT and Shockwave, why is it more effective?
By combining the shockwave treatment with EMTT technology, we achieve a more comprehensive stimulation of both tissue and nervous system, resulting in a stronger and more sustained erection. This effect is because EMTT technology not only increases tissue elasticity, but also increases the release of growth factors, which are essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy erection, compared to shockwave alone. The growth factors contribute to the repair and formation of new blood vessels, which improves blood flow to the penis and strengthens your erection.
The combination treatment has proven to be significantly more effective than shockwave therapy alone. My clients report significantly better results, such as faster improvement, longer duration of effect and an overall increase in their sexual satisfaction. This advanced method offers hope to those who have previously had limited treatment options and can make a real difference to their quality of life.
I expect this combination of shockwave and EMTT to become the standard for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in the future as it represents a significant advance in the field. I was the first to introduce EMTT in Denmark in 2020 and am one of the world’s leading and most experienced in EMTT treatment. I take pride in leading the way to deliver the best possible treatment to my clients, and I look forward to helping more men restore their sexual health and confidence.
Can I get help after Radical Prostatectomy?
After prostate cancer surgery, erectile dysfunction is unfortunately a common challenge, but fortunately there is hope for improvement. When the nerve tissue around the prostate is preserved during surgery, shockwave therapy and EMTT can play a crucial role in restoring erectile function in the first year after surgery. This treatment can often be combined with medication or injections to optimize results and help you maintain satisfactory sexual function.
It is crucial to start treatment as soon as possible after surgery, ideally within the first 6 months, as this window of time offers the best chances of success. Early treatment not only helps to stimulate the nerve tissue and swelling limbs, but also to reduce the risk of inappropriate scar tissue formation in the pelvic floor and reduce incontinence. In my experience, the biggest improvements are seen in those who start treatment soon after surgery, which increases the chances of regaining good erectile ability and function.
Shockwave therapy has now also been introduced at Odense University Hospital, where, as in my clinic, they have observed an increased effect on nerve tissue regeneration. They have started treatment as early as three weeks after surgery, provided that all cancerous tissue has been removed. Although early treatment gives the best results, I also see positive effects in clients who start treatment several years after their surgery, but this will require a more specialized approach
What does self-esteem mean for erectile function?
Your self-esteem plays a crucial role in your ability to achieve and maintain an erection. When self-esteem is low, it can lead to feelings of shame, performance anxiety, and in the worst case scenario, depression and stress. These negative feelings can greatly affect your desire for sex and ability to get an erection, creating a vicious cycle where each failed sexual experience further degrades your self-image and exacerbates the problem.
As a sexologist, I understand how closely linked self-esteem and sexual function are, which is why I offer a holistic approach to treatment. Along with shockwave therapy, which physically improves your erectile function, I also help you rebuild your self-esteem. We work on the psychological aspects that may underlie your challenges and I support you in developing a healthier attitude towards yourself and your sexuality.
If you’re open to it, together we will explore the thought patterns and feelings that may be inhibiting your sexual performance. This may include working with performance anxiety, processing past negative experiences or developing new strategies to manage stress and expectations. As a sexologist, I will guide you through this process and help you break the cycle so you can achieve more satisfying and successful sexual functioning.
By combining physical treatment with my expertise as a sexologist, we can not only improve your erectile function, but also boost your self-esteem and overall wellbeing. This holistic approach ensures you get the best possible treatment, treating not only the symptoms but also the underlying causes of your challenges.
How does performance anxiety affect erectile function?
Performance anxiety is one of the most common challenges that can inhibit erectile function, especially when you feel pressure to live up to high expectations from your partner. Thoughts like “Am I good enough?”, “Is my penis big enough?” and “Can I satisfy her?” can quickly lead to stress (activation of the body’s fight, flight and freeze) and insecurity, which directly affects your ability to get and maintain an erection. These concerns can create a vicious cycle where the fear of failure leads to the very problems you fear the most.
As a sexologist, I have extensive experience helping men who experience performance anxiety and I understand how paralyzing these thoughts can be. Together, we will work to identify the specific concerns underlying your anxiety and I will help you develop strategies to manage and overcome these feelings. This may include techniques to reduce stress, change negative thought patterns, and build confidence in your sexual relationship.
My goal is to give you the tools to break the negative spiral of performance anxiety so you can regain control of your sex life. I will help you understand that your value lies not only in your sexual performance, but also in your ability to be present, empathetic and attentive to your partner. By working with both the psychological and emotional aspects of performance anxiety, together we can create a more relaxed and fulfilling sexual experience where you feel free to be yourself without fear of judgment.
By combining my expertise as a sexologist with an understanding of the complex emotions that can affect your erectile function, we can create a solid platform to improve both your confidence and your sexual health.
What treatments are available for erection problems and erectile dysfunction?
At MS Insight, I offer a wide range of the latest and most effective treatment options for erectile dysfunction. Every man is unique, which is why I tailor the treatment to your individual needs and health condition. Here is an overview of the different treatments we offer:
Physical activity guide
Regular physical activity is an important component in maintaining a healthy erectile function. Exercise improves blood circulation, reduces stress and helps maintain a healthy body weight – all factors that contribute to better sexual function. We advise on which forms of exercise are most effective for you and how you can integrate them into your daily life.
Vacuum pump
A vacuum pump is an effective and non-invasive tool that can help you achieve an erection. By creating a vacuum around the penis, blood flow is increased, resulting in an erection. This method can be particularly useful for men who want an alternative solution to medication or surgery. We offer guidance on the correct use of the vacuum pump to ensure optimal effect and comfort. Especially after prostate surgery, this can be beneficial.
Shockwave and EMTT
Shockwave therapy and EMTT (Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy) are some of the most advanced treatment options available today. Shockwave therapy stimulates blood vessel growth and improves blood circulation in the penis, while EMTT increases tissue elasticity and promotes the release of growth factors that are essential for a good erection. The combination of these technologies can significantly improve erectile performance, even in men who have experienced significant challenges with erectile dysfunction.
Sexological therapy
Psychological factors often play a major role in erectile dysfunction, which is why we also offer sexological therapy as part of our treatment package. As a sexologist, I help you deal with performance anxiety, self-esteem issues, and other emotional barriers that can affect your sexual function. Therapy can be a powerful way to break the vicious cycle of negative thoughts and feelings that can worsen erectile dysfunction.
Stem cells (not offered in clinic)
Stem cell therapy is an innovative and experimental method being studied for its potential to restore erectile function by regenerating damaged tissue. Although I do not offer stem cell therapy in my clinic, I keep up-to-date on the latest advances in this field and can advise you on the options if relevant to you.
Injections or pills (available from your GP)
Injections and pills, such as PDE-5 inhibitors, are common treatments for erectile dysfunction. Although I don’t offer them directly in the clinic, I can provide you with information and guidance on how they work, as well as refer you to the right specialists if you are considering this type of treatment.
Surgery (pump insertion)
In some cases, a surgical solution, such as the insertion of a penis pump, may be the most effective treatment option. This is a last resort when all else has been tried and failed.
This procedure involves the implantation of a pump that can manually create an erection by moving fluid within the penis. Although we do not perform this surgery in the clinic, we can help you understand the process and refer you to the best specialists if you are considering this procedure.
Martin's experience with shockwave treatment for erection problems
“Despite regular exercise, a healthy diet and a continued active sex life, throughout my fifties I have experienced a gradual deterioration in my ability to have a proper and sustained erection. Well, in reality, that process probably started even earlier.
I’ve never really liked pills, even though they provide an easy and effective short-term effect. I became curious when I read about Michael and MS Insight. I took the test and gave myself a birthday present by purchasing what in my case were 6 recommended treatments.
You quickly get used to the formless and in no way painful shockwave treatment of the perineum and penis. The treatment is painless and you quickly get used to relaxing with the “tingling” waves from the shockwave machine.
You can convince yourself that there’s not much difference between opening your mouth and dropping your pants in private with your therapist. Then the experience is on par with a dental cleaning. Michael is very organized and has always handled my treatments and one-on-one sessions in a good and relaxed manner.
After my 6 treatments, I experienced a noticeable change in both the ability to get and the frequency of having a naturally good erection. Cozy when you wake up in the morning and nice when you’re with your girlfriend.
It’s been worth every penny for me and I’m willing to go again in 5 or 10 years if I later lose the level that I have now regained.”
