Erection gel works quickly and locally, but is often only a temporary solution to a deeper problem. In this article, I discuss how the gel works, its pros and cons, and why symptom management is rarely enough. By reading on, you’ll learn how I use advanced treatments at MS Insight to help you regain natural function and confidence without dependence on drugs.

When erection fails, it’s only natural to look for a quick and effective solution. I meet many men in my clinic who, in frustration, have searched the internet and found “erection gel” as an alternative to the more well-known potency pills. The idea of a product that works locally and here-and-now may seem appealing. But the question is, is it the right solution for you in the long run, or is it just covering up a deeper problem that I can help you solve permanently?
In this article, I will explain what erection gel is, how it works and what pros and cons you should be aware of. I’ll also give you an insight into why in MS Insight I focus on treating the cause rather than just the symptom, so you can regain your natural function and quality of life.
Erection gel is a drug that typically contains the active ingredient alprostadil. Unlike pills like Viagra or Cialis, which must be taken orally and act systemically throughout the body, the gel is designed for topical application directly on the penis.
The product is often known as Vitaros (or similar generic variants). It works by chemically dilating the blood vessels. When the vessels dilate, blood flow to the erectile tissue increases, which is the physiological prerequisite for achieving and maintaining an erection.
What makes the gel attractive to some men is its fast onset of action – often within 5 to 30 minutes. Because the effect is localized, it avoids some of the systemic side effects that pills can cause, such as headaches or facial redness. However, it’s important to understand that the gel is a mechanical aid; it forces a reaction whether you are sexually stimulated or not, although stimulation naturally improves the result.
The application of erection gel differs significantly from pills and requires a certain technical approach. It is important to emphasize that it is not a cream that is simply smeared on the skin, but a gel that must be inserted into the urethral opening at the tip of the penis.
The process typically goes like this:
1. Empty your bladder (urinate) before application, as the gel works best in an empty urethra.
2. Remove the cap of the small applicator (a kind of disposable pipette).
3. Place the tip of the applicator at the opening of the urethra and press the plunger down to gently introduce the gel.
4. Then hold the penis upwards for about 30 seconds to allow the gel to penetrate and be absorbed into the tissue without running out again.
For many men, this method of application can be intimidating or cumbersome. It can be a challenge in an intimate situation where you want things to be spontaneous and romantic rather than having to handle medical devices.
As a specialist in men’s intimate health, I want you to make informed choices. That’s why it’s crucial to weigh up the pros and cons before you decide.
Although erection gel works locally, it is unfortunately not without side effects. The most common discomfort I hear about from clients who have tried the gel is localized pain. This is often described as a burning, stinging sensation in the penis that can persist both during and after the act. In addition, there may be obvious redness of the penis or foreskin.
In rare cases, you may experience dizziness if your blood pressure drops slightly, but this is less common than with pills. It is also important to mention that if your partner is pregnant, you *must* use a condom when using the gel as the active ingredient can potentially affect pregnancy.
When I talk to men in the clinic, I often ask them what their real goal is. Is the ambition simply to be able to have intercourse here and now with the help of chemistry, or is the dream to regain a natural, strong erection that works without the use of aids every time?
Erection gel – like pills – is purely symptomatic. It’s a “crutch” that helps you get through the act, but it does nothing to improve blood vessel health or nerve supply in the pelvis. On the contrary, many men experience a psychological dependence on the drugs. They begin to doubt their own body: “Can I even do without it?” This often creates a negative spiral of performance anxiety, which ironically can make the problem worse in the long run.
At MS Insight, I work from a fundamentally different philosophy. I want to help you optimize your tissue, blood flow and nervous system so that you have the best conditions to function naturally again.
If you’re tired of planning your sex life according to an applicator or a pill, there are effective technological treatments that work on physiology itself.
In my clinic, I specialize in combination treatments that target the physical causes of erectile dysfunction. These are often poor blood flow (atherosclerosis in the small vessels) or tension in the pelvic floor that pinches nerves and blood vessels.
My main tools are focused shockwave and EMTT (Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy).
By combining these technologies, I treat the entire ‘engine room’ of erection, not just the penis itself.
To understand why gel may not be the final solution, we need to look at the causes. Erectile dysfunction is rarely “just in your head”, although the mind does play a role. It’s often an early sign of cardiovascular challenges, as the blood vessels in the penis are very small and therefore the first to clog or lose elasticity.
Other causes can be
When you use a gel, you’re not addressing any of these underlying factors. You’re just temporarily bypassing them.
I know it can be difficult to take the first step and book an appointment. Many men have been dealing with this problem alone for years. At MS Insight, there are no white coats or impersonal waiting room atmosphere. I meet you at eye level and we talk openly and directly about things.
A course always starts with a thorough conversation and an advanced ultrasound scan of the penile vessels. I don’t guess what your blood flow is – I measure it. The scan gives us a concrete picture of whether your erectile dysfunction is due to a reduced blood supply (arterial insufficiency) or if the blood is leaking out too quickly (venous leak).
Based on the scan and our conversation, I tailor a program for you. This typically includes a series of shockwave treatments, possibly supplemented with EMTT and neuromodulation. I’ll also advise you on relevant blood tests, which you can discuss with your GP to rule out hormonal imbalances such as low testosterone.
Erection gel may be an emergency solution for some, but most men I meet dream of getting rid of scheduling, applicators and side effects. They want to feel like themselves again.
If you’re ready to address the cause of your problems instead of just treating symptoms, I’m ready to help you. I have extensive experience in helping men with the challenges you face, and I emphasize a safe, discreet and professional process.

Are you unsure about what’s causing your symptoms, or whether a specialized treatment program at our clinic in Copenhagen would be right for you? If so, you can start with a brief, confidential consultation. During this consultation, we’ll assess whether your symptoms align with the areas I specialize in at MS Insight and determine what the next appropriate step might be.
The clarifying conversation is not a full consultation, diagnosis or treatment plan. It’s for those who want a serious assessment of whether it makes sense to proceed with a more thorough examination, ultrasound scan and individual plan.
The clinic is a private clinic offering an alternative treatment setup to the public system with shockwave, EMTT and NESA X for sexual dysfunctions and especially erectile dysfunction, peyronies and pelvic pain.
