Lack of morning erection is more than just potency issues

Is your morning travel missing? It’s no coincidence.

The morning rise is the body’s own function test. When you sleep, the body tests that all nerves, blood vessels and tissues in the penis are functioning properly.

If morning erections become less frequent or disappear altogether, it can be an early sign of the onset of erectile dysfunction or cardiovascular disease. Often caused by changes in blood circulation, nerve function or hormone balance, you should take this seriously and not just dismiss it as an age thing.

What is a morning erection?

A morning erection, also known as a nocturnal erection or nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT), occurs spontaneously when you sleep. It typically happens during the REM phase of sleep. It is the body’s automatic check of its own functions.

Most men experience 3-5 erections during the night, which can last up to 35 minutes. The last erection will often coincide with the time you wake up. That’s why we often call it a morning erection.

In the clinic, we have the ability to measure the number of nocturnal emissions with special sensor equipment that you sleep with at night.

A personal account of erectile dysfunction

“Although I’ve always been physically active, eaten healthily and had a good sex life, during my 50s I noticed a slow decline in my ability to get and maintain a good erection. The truth is that the change started earlier, but only became apparent with age.

I’ve never been a big fan of potency medication – although it works quickly and effectively, it didn’t feel like the right solution for me. When I read about Michael and MS Insight, my curiosity was piqued. I took the test and decided to give myself a birthday present: a course of treatment for erectile dysfunction with the 6 treatments recommended for erectile impotence.

The shockwave treatment for erectile dysfunction itself—which targets the perineum and the penis—is completely painless and, in fact, surprisingly pleasant. It feels like gentle tingles and waves, and you get used to it quickly.

If you can put aside the mental barrier and accept that taking your pants off is no more uncomfortable than opening your mouth at the dentist, the treatment becomes almost routine. Michael is very professional and makes the whole situation feel comfortable and relaxed around erectile dysfunction impotence. I have felt comfortable with every single treatment.

After the 6 sessions, I noticed a clear improvement – both in the ability to get an erection and in how often it happened spontaneously. It’s a pleasure to wake up in the morning and feel natural again – and even better to share it with my boyfriend.

For me, it’s been worth every penny. And if one day I feel that the effect is wearing off, I could easily come back in a few years for a refresher.”

Why erection is disappearing

It can be normal to experience a lack of morning rising for periods of time, especially if there are major life changes such as stress, alcohol, poor sleep or other strains. But it should only be temporary and not permanent.

Morning rise can also vary with age and lifestyle. However, if it is absent for several weeks or months, it can be a sign that the body is no longer in balance. In some cases, it may be linked to underlying conditions that should be taken seriously and investigated further.

A large study from the Mayo Clinic has shown that up to 70% of men with erectile dysfunction also had symptoms of cardiovascular disease. And that decreased nighttime erection/morning erection was often the first symptom.

It’s normal for the frequency and force of the morning erection to decrease with age – especially after the age of 50, but it should still occur regularly.

I help you get your morning erection back in a safe and effective way that lasts, while increasing your health and erectile performance. And I know what I’m talking about. I’ve been there myself.

Possible reasons for lack of morning erection

Sleep: If your sleep is irregular and frequently interrupted, it can lead to a lack of REM sleep. This may indicate that the sympathetic nervous system is working overtime and will not lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels during the night.

Hormonal balances: The body’s production of male sex hormones naturally decreases with age. But it is also affected by stress, obesity and sleep deprivation as mentioned before. This triad can contribute to decreased libido and erectile dysfunction, including lack of morning erection.

Circulation: Atherosclerosis, diabetes and high blood pressure reduce blood flow, which is a crucial factor for sexual function. The stress this creates makes the tissue and blood vessels in the penis less flexible. If that tissue is stiff, it could mean a lack of morning erection and erectile function during sexual activity.

Nerve damage: If there has been damage to the nervous system, it can cause a lack of morning erection. This can be prostate surgery, cancer, diabetes, herniated discs or pudendal neuralgia. In short, the system and signals from the brain to the penis are affected.

Medication side effects: Many medications can cause a lack of morning erection. Especially medications that affect the nervous system, such as antidepressants and beta-blockers. But also blood pressure medications in general.

Morning rise acts as a clinical biomarker for:

  • Effective nerve function for the penis

  • Healthy blood flow and heart function

  • Hormone balances that support erection

  • General function of the erectile tissue. When this automatic signal is absent, it is often the first objective sign that the mechanisms that make an erection possible have been negatively affected.

Therefore, it is important to take it seriously when it starts to disappear for more than 6-8 weeks.

How can MS Insight help you with lack of morning erection / morning erection?

We start by finding the cause of your lack of morning erection. Morning erection is closely linked to blood circulation, nerve function and the body’s hormonal balance – that’s why we investigate these areas.

  • Conversation about symptoms, health and lifestyle

  • Ultrasound scan to assess blood flow, calcifications and tissue quality

  • HRV measurement to assess nervous system balance if needed

  • Night-time travel can be measured over time with a special sensor and show the development (available separately)

The goal is to find out why you’ve lost your morning erections and then create a treatment plan.

With the right plan, 8 out of 10 men get their morning erection back in less than 6 weeks with treatment at the clinic.

Treatment for lack of morning departure

Shockwave Therapy
Stimulates blood vessels and nerves in the penis, improving microcirculation and nerve activity. It increases blood flow to the erectile tissues and supports the body’s natural ability to achieve and maintain an erection—even during sleep.

EMTT (Magnetolith)
Affects cellular energy metabolism and nervous system function. It can support the biological processes necessary for normal nerve activity and tissue function. In particular, treatment of the nervous system in the back boosts sexual potency and morning erections.

Lifestyle Optimization
Sleep, stress levels, physical activity, weight, and metabolic health all play a major role in waking up in the morning. That’s why making specific lifestyle changes can be a key part of restoring your body’s balance—and you need to be prepared for that. It’s about your long-term health.

Morning travel through life – and what it says about your health

Morning erection changes throughout life, but it shouldn ‘t disappear. In fact, morning erection is an important indicator of a man’s overall health, blood circulation and hormone balance – and thus also of longevity and healthy aging.

In men in their 20s, morning erection will often occur almost every day. The body’s testosterone levels, blood vessels and nerve function are working optimally.

In their 30s and 40s, many will experience morning wakefulness several times a week. The frequency can vary depending on sleep, stress, physical fitness and lifestyle.

In your 50s and beyond, the frequency may decrease slightly, but morning erection should still occur. When present, it’s often a sign that the blood vessels, nervous system and hormonal balance continue to function well – factors that are also closely linked to healthy ageing and longevity.

Therefore, morning erection is not just a matter of sexuality. It’s also a biological marker of overall body health.

If morning erections suddenly stop or are absent for a long period of time, it can be an early signal that something in the body is out of balance. In some cases, it may be related to changes in blood vessels, metabolism or hormone balance – factors that also play a role in diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Is it normal to have periods of no morning rise?

At times, the morning journey may be briefly delayed due to weather conditions:

  • Jet lag or altered circadian rhythm
  • Temporary stress or lack of sleep
  • After illness or fever
  • With increased alcohol or drug intake
  • When starting a new medicine

If your morning erection returns within a few weeks, it’s rarely a sign of illness or something to be concerned about. However, if you experience a lack of morning erection for more than 6-8 weeks, it should be investigated further.
