Natural remedies for erectile dysfunction | What really works?

Many men first look for natural remedies when they begin to experience erectile problems. This is completely understandable. But this is also where many spend time and money on solutions that either have very limited scientific evidence or do not address the actual cause.

Natural remedies, dietary supplements, and lifestyle changes can play a role in some cases, but they should be evaluated objectively and in the context of the overall picture. The most important question is rarely which remedy you choose. It’s what is actually causing the problem.

Natural Remedies for Erectile Dysfunction: What Actually Works?

When erections start to become unreliable, many men first look for a natural solution. That’s understandable. Maybe you don’t want to take medication, maybe the problem isn’t that severe yet, or maybe you’re hoping that a dietary supplement can help without having to talk to anyone about it.

But the market for natural remedies, dietary supplements, and so-called natural sexual enhancement products is difficult to navigate. Some products are based on a biological explanation that may be relevant for some men. Others have very limited scientific evidence to support their claims. And some products, especially those purchased online, may contain active pharmaceutical ingredients that aren’t listed on the label.

The most important question, therefore, is rarely which natural remedy you should choose. The most important thing is what is actually causing your erectile problems.

Short answer: Can natural remedies help with erectile dysfunction?

Natural remedies and dietary supplements may provide a slight improvement for some men with mild erectile dysfunction. European urological guidelines mention L-arginine and ginseng as options for men with mild erectile dysfunction who do not wish to pursue medical treatment, but they also emphasize that the effect may be modest.

Natural remedies should therefore not be considered a surefire solution for erectile dysfunction. Nor should they delay seeking an evaluation if the problem is persistent, worsening, or occurs alongside an illness, medication, pain, penile curvature, or a significantly reduced sex drive.

If you have recurring or noticeable problems getting or maintaining an erection, you can read more about erection problems and impotence treatment, where we review various possible causes and relevant next steps.

Why do many people seek natural solutions?

Erectile dysfunction can feel private and embarrassing. Many men would prefer to try something on their own before contacting a clinic or doctor. A dietary supplement can seem like a simple and discreet option: You buy it, try it, and hope that your erections will improve.

For some, the search for natural remedies is also driven by a desire to avoid prescription medications or potential side effects. For others, it’s because pills haven’t worked well enough in the past, or because they want to improve their sexual function through sleep, exercise, weight loss, and better circulation.

The problem arises when natural remedies are used to address a symptom without considering the underlying cause. Erectile dysfunction can be linked to factors such as blood flow, diabetes, high blood pressure, medications, testosterone, nerves, stress, performance anxiety, the pelvic floor, previous surgeries, or changes in penile tissue.

The same symptom can therefore require very different solutions. At MS Insight, we don’t start by recommending a specific product or a standard treatment plan. We begin by assessing what is most likely causing the problem and what realistically makes sense as the next step.

Can natural remedies help with erectile dysfunction?

There are dietary supplements and plant-based substances that are often marketed to men with erectile dysfunction. L-arginine, citrulline, and ginseng are frequently mentioned because they are associated with blood flow or sexual function.

However, the evidence is not strong enough to support presenting natural remedies as a treatment on par with approved medications or other targeted interventions. The European Association of Urology states that L-arginine or ginseng may be tried by men with mild erectile dysfunction who do not wish to undergo medical treatment, provided they are informed that the improvement may be modest.

In practice, this means that natural remedies may be appropriate for some men with milder symptoms and realistic expectations. This does not mean that a dietary supplement will resolve persistent impotence, pronounced erectile problems, or issues primarily caused by illness, medication, nerve damage, or tissue changes.

If you’ve already tried natural remedies without any noticeable effect, the solution is rarely simply to add another product. It’s often more helpful to determine why the problem has arisen.

L-arginine and citrulline: What can you realistically expect?

L-arginine is an amino acid that the body uses to produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is essential for the blood vessels’ ability to dilate and therefore plays a role in the normal erection process. Citrulline is converted in the body to arginine and is often marketed for a similar purpose.

It is biologically plausible that these supplements may support blood flow in some men. However, it is important to keep expectations realistic. If any effect is experienced, it will typically be modest and most relevant for mild erectile dysfunction.

L-arginine or citrulline is not, in and of itself, a solution if the problem is primarily due to significantly reduced blood flow, nerve damage following surgery, severe hormone deficiency, Peyronie’s disease, medication side effects, or significant psychological stress.

Ginseng: Potential Effect, but Not a Sure Solution

Ginseng is one of the natural remedies most frequently mentioned in connection with erectile function and sexual performance. Some studies suggest a possible improvement in some men with erectile problems, and ginseng is mentioned in the European urological guidelines as a potential solution for mild erectile dysfunction in men who do not wish to undergo medical treatment.

However, this does not mean that ginseng can be expected to solve the problem. The effect may be small, and product quality, dosage, and content may vary. A product sold as ginseng is not necessarily comparable to another product with the same name.

Ginseng should therefore be viewed as a potential, but limited, aid for certain men—not as a shortcut that makes it unnecessary to understand the cause of the symptoms.

What about maca, testosterone boosters, and “natural Viagra”?

Many products are marketed using terms such as libido, testosterone, stamina, male enhancement, or “natural Viagra.” Here, it’s particularly important to distinguish between marketing claims and scientific evidence.

For products like maca and various testosterone boosters, the evidence regarding erectile dysfunction is generally less reliable. Some products are marketed based on traditional use or broad promises of energy, desire, and sexual performance, but that is not the same as documented improvement in erectile function.

If you’re experiencing a significant decrease in sex drive, fewer morning erections, low energy, or other symptoms that might suggest a hormonal problem, you shouldn’t focus on random testosterone boosters. Instead, it may be appropriate to assess whether blood tests and a medical evaluation are warranted. Read more about testosterone and erectile dysfunction.

In particular, products that promise a quick, Viagra-like effect without a prescription should be approached with caution. The Danish Medicines Agency has warned against illegal sexual enhancement drugs, which may contain active pharmaceutical ingredients without this being stated on the product label.

This may pose a real risk, especially if you have cardiovascular disease, are taking blood pressure medication, or are using other medications that may interact with erectile dysfunction drugs.

Natural remedies, dietary supplements, and lifestyle changes are not the same thing

It’s important to distinguish between dietary supplements and the lifestyle changes that can actually improve the foundation for a better erection.

A dietary supplement is a product you consume. Lifestyle, on the other hand, involves factors such as physical fitness, weight, sleep, smoking, alcohol, stress, blood sugar, blood pressure, and circulation. For many men, these factors are more relevant to erectile function than a single natural remedy.

The European Association of Urology recommends that lifestyle changes and management of relevant risk factors be implemented before or concurrently with treatment for erectile dysfunction. This is because erectile function is often closely linked to vascular function and overall metabolic health.

Among other things, it may be relevant to consider:

  • Physical activity, particularly regular cardiovascular exercise.
  • Overweight and waist circumference, if applicable.
  • Smoking and nicotine.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Sleep quality and possible sleep apnea.
  • Stress levels and mental strain.
  • Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

This does not mean that erectile dysfunction can always be resolved through exercise or lifestyle changes. But it does mean that these factors can be an important part of the assessment and, in some cases, have a greater impact on function than random dietary supplements.

When might natural remedies risk delaying a proper evaluation?

If the problems are mild and short-lived, it may be understandable to start with better sleep, more exercise, less alcohol, and possibly a carefully chosen dietary supplement. However, in cases of recurring or pronounced erectile dysfunction, you should not continue to experiment without determining whether there is an underlying cause.

It’s especially important to get an evaluation if:

  • The problem has persisted for a long time or is getting worse.
  • You’re experiencing fewer or weaker morning erections than before.
  • You have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a known cardiovascular condition.
  • You are taking medication that may affect sexual function.
  • You have a significantly reduced sex drive, fatigue, or suspect you have low testosterone.
  • You have pain, curvature, plaque, or other changes in the penis.
  • Pills or natural remedies have inconsistent results or don’t work at all.
  • The problem is affecting your relationship, your self-confidence, or your desire for intimacy.

Erectile dysfunction can, in some cases, be a sign of impaired vascular function and should therefore not always be viewed as an isolated sexual problem. If you experience new or persistent symptoms, your primary care physician may be able to help with medical evaluations, including checks of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, hormones, and medications.

Natural remedies or pills: What’s the difference?

Many men seek out natural remedies because they want an alternative to Viagra, Cialis, or similar medications. The difference is that approved PDE5 inhibitors have been studied, dosed, and used under well-established safety conditions, whereas dietary supplements typically have more limited evidence and greater variation in content and quality.

That doesn’t mean pills are the right choice for everyone. Medications can cause side effects, be unsuitable in certain situations, or prove ineffective. But it does mean that the comparison should be objective: A natural remedy is not automatically better or safer simply because it is marketed as natural.

If you’re considering medication or have already tried it, you can read more about erectile dysfunction and pills. If the effect has been inconsistent or insufficient, the focus shouldn’t just be on finding a new product, but also on understanding why the treatment hasn’t been effective enough.

When the problem requires more than a dietary supplement

Erectile dysfunction is not a single diagnosis. Two men may experience nearly the same symptoms but have different underlying causes and thus require different solutions.

For some, the problem is primarily related to blood flow. For others, testosterone, medications, diabetes, nerves, the pelvic floor, stress, or previous surgeries play a greater role. In some cases, multiple factors are present simultaneously.

If the assessment indicates that blood flow or tissue quality is a significant part of the problem, targeted treatments may be appropriate in select cases. If, on the other hand, the symptoms are primarily related to hormones, medications, psychological factors, or another medical condition, a different approach makes more sense.

What matters isn’t whether you choose natural remedies, pills, shockwave therapy, or another solution first. What matters is whether the choice addresses the root cause of the problem.

How do we assess erectile dysfunction at MS Insight?

At MS Insight, a treatment plan doesn’t start with a standard product or a fixed treatment package. It begins with a confidential assessment of your symptoms, how the problem manifests, when it occurs, and what factors may be relevant in your specific situation.

Among other things, we examine whether the problem is constant or situational, whether sexual desire is affected, whether medication or illness may be a factor, and whether there are signs that tissue, blood flow, the pelvic floor, or nerves should be evaluated further.

In selected cases, an ultrasound scan can help assess relevant tissue, structural, or circulatory conditions. If, for example, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, or low testosterone is suspected, relevant blood tests and medical evaluation should be conducted in collaboration with your primary care physician or an appropriate specialist.

You’ll meet with Michael directly at the clinic, so your evaluation, any treatment, and follow-up are closely coordinated from the start.

When you come for your first consultation, we start with a thorough conversation where we talk openly about your challenges and the lifestyle factors that may affect your erectile function in a safe and confidential environment. Together, we will uncover whether your erectile dysfunction is constant or more situational, which gives us important insights into the underlying causes. I recommend that your doctor is also part of the process to make sure that all blood values are normal and that any comorbidities such as diabetes or heart problems are under control.

As part of the initial examination, I perform an ultrasound scan of both the penis and pelvic floor to assess blood flow and muscle balance in these areas. This scan allows us to identify any physical causes of your erectile dysfunction, such as reduced blood flow or pelvic floor tension. In addition, I’ll perform a brief screening of your heart’s pumping function to ensure your heart is functioning optimally, as cardiovascular health plays a key role in erectile function. If necessary, we can also examine the prostate and bladder to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms.

To gain a full understanding of your body’s health status, I’ll perform an advanced body analysis using the clinic’s InBody 770 system. This analysis provides detailed information about your body composition, including muscle mass, body fat percentage, and visceral fat. This data helps us assess your overall health and predict how your body will respond to the planned treatment. At the same time, I’ll also examine your back to see if it might be affecting your ability to achieve an erection.

After the initial examination, you will receive guidance on pelvic floor exercises to improve your muscle strength and support the treatment. Together we will discuss your expectations for the treatment and create a tailor-made plan for your treatment, so you can feel comfortable and well-informed every step of the way. If you wish, we can also start shockwave and EMTT treatment at your first consultation, so you can quickly get started on improving your erectile function.

I’ll ensure that we implement the treatment strategy that’s right for you, so you can once again enjoy a fulfilling sex life. I take a thorough approach to your treatment because you deserve the best possible solution to your erectile dysfunction. If adjustments to your diet and lifestyle are needed, I’ll collaborate with external partners—including nutritionists and personal trainers—to provide you with the best possible support and ensure that all aspects of your erectile function are addressed.

If you’re curious about treating erectile dysfunction with natural remedies, we can also discuss that.

Scientific Basis and Realistic Expectations

Natural remedies may be of interest to men who wish to start cautiously or avoid medical treatment. However, natural remedies should not be overemphasized beyond what the evidence supports.

European urological guidelines state that L-arginine or ginseng may be tried by men with mild erectile dysfunction who do not wish to take medication, provided they are informed that any improvement is likely to be modest. The same guidelines emphasize lifestyle changes and control of relevant risk factors as key components of managing erectile dysfunction.

At the same time, the Danish Medicines Agency warns against illegal sexual enhancement products, which may be sold online and contain active pharmaceutical ingredients not listed on the product label.

The most accurate message is therefore: Natural remedies may be a small part of the solution for some men. However, in cases of persistent erectile dysfunction, the first step should be to understand the cause, not to simply stack one product on top of another.

Get a more accurate assessment of what’s causing the problem

If you’ve tried natural remedies without noticeable results, or if you’re unsure whether your erectile problems are due to blood flow, medication, testosterone, stress, or a combination of factors, a more thorough evaluation may be the next logical step.

At MS Insight, the first step isn’t about selling you a specific treatment. It’s about figuring out what realistically makes sense in your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Natural Medicine and Erectile Dysfunction

Can natural remedies help with erectile dysfunction?

Natural remedies may provide a slight improvement for some men with mild erectile dysfunction. However, the evidence is limited, and natural remedies should not be considered a surefire solution for persistent erectile dysfunction.

Which natural remedies have the strongest evidence for treating erectile dysfunction?

The European Association of Urology mentions L-arginine and ginseng as possible supplements for men with mild erectile dysfunction who do not wish to undergo medical treatment. At the same time, it emphasizes that the effect may be modest.

Is “natural Viagra” safe?

Not necessarily. Products marketed as “natural Viagra” or quick potency boosters may lack sufficient scientific evidence. The Danish Medicines Agency has issued warnings about illegal potency supplements that may contain undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients.

Can I take dietary supplements with Viagra or Cialis?

This should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, especially if you’re taking medication for high blood pressure, heart disease, or other chronic conditions. Natural remedies aren’t automatically free from the risk of interactions.

When should I seek a medical evaluation instead of trying natural remedies?

If your erectile problems persist, worsen, affect your quality of life, or occur alongside an illness, medication, pain, curvature, or reduced libido, a more precise evaluation makes more sense than continuing to experiment at random.

Are lifestyle changes better supported by evidence than dietary supplements?

For many types of erectile dysfunction, physical activity, weight management, and control of relevant risk factors are more firmly established in clinical guidelines than dietary supplements alone.

Can ultrasound determine whether natural remedies will work?

No. Ultrasound cannot predict the effect of a dietary supplement. In select cases, however, an ultrasound scan may help assess tissue, structural changes, or blood flow that could be relevant to the erectile dysfunction.

Frequently asked questions about erectile dysfunction

  • With the use of shockwave, new small blood vessels form in the penis and clean out the “dirt” in the cavernous bodies. The nerves, muscles and blood vessels of the diaphragm are also stimulated, giving you a stronger and better erection again. Without the unpleasant side effects seen with other treatments.
  • The program usually lasts 6-8 weeks and is adapted to your needs and the degree of the problem in relation to the sex life you want. All with the aim of ensuring you have a high quality of life and good self-esteem. You get the tools to make a difference for yourself, your feelings as a man and not least your erection, so you avoid problems again in the future. A course of treatment usually consists of 6, 9 or 12 treatments, where 90% of our clients experience a better and more powerful erection.
  • In cases of severe illness or medication use, ongoing maintenance may be necessary, but I will provide guidance on this during your first consultation following the initial examination.
  • I’ll identify the triggers specific to you during your first visit to the clinic for an examination. This will also allow you to continue working on your own using various tools. The latest research and experience from our German colleagues show that it is recommended to supplement your treatment with an additional course of 6 sessions after 6 months. This has been shown to provide a longer-lasting effect (several years at the achieved level).
  • Others choose to receive regular maintenance with a few individual treatments throughout the year to maintain high nerve activity.
  • A single shockwave treatment combined with EMTT costs between 1,550 and 2,000 Danish kroner, depending on how advanced a treatment option you choose. I was the first in Denmark to work with the combination of shockwave and EMTT, which has proven to be more effective than shockwave alone, and I have set the standard for ED treatment both in Denmark and abroad.
  • At your first consultation, you can choose whether you’d like just a consultation and examination, which costs 1,700 kroner, or start treatment right away.
  • If you’d like to review various studies, you can find them here: Studies on ED

We also have the opportunity to combine the shockwave treatment with the brand new EMTT technology, which provides increased stimulation of the nervous system and elasticity in the pelvic floor tissue, as well as an increased release of growth factors and other building blocks for increased cell quality. Therefore, we stimulate a wider area than with shockwave alone. In order to get a good and powerful erection, the tissue in the penis must be able to expand up to 20-25 times, so supple tissue is important.

This combination produces a more powerful effect than shockwave therapy alone. This is also confirmed by our clients who have previously received shockwave therapy as a standalone treatment. We expect this combination to become the standard of care for treating erectile dysfunction in the future. We are the clinic in Denmark that introduced EMTT back in 2020 and were the first to offer this innovative combination therapy, which will provide you with better results and stronger erections. Other clinics have since adopted Michael’s protocols in their treatments.

After prostate cancer surgery, it is common to see severe erection problems. Normally, the surgeon will try to preserve one of the two nerves running along the prostate that affect erectile function. If the nerve is preserved, we can use shockwave to increase erectile function, if possible in combination with pills or injections. This way you will be able to maintain sexual activity and a good erection.

However, it is important to start treatment soon after surgery, as there is a window of opportunity during the first 6 months after surgery to stimulate the nerve tissue. This is also when we have the best chance of reducing excessive scar tissue formation in the pelvic floor following surgery.

Every week, I see clients at the clinic who underwent surgery several years ago. We still see good results from the treatment in terms of improved erectile function and sensation. But where I see the greatest effect is when treatment begins just a few weeks after surgery.

Most recently, shockwave treatment has started as early as 3 weeks after surgery at Odense University Hospital, where, just like here in the clinic, they see an increased effect on the regeneration of nerve tissue. This also increases erectile function and limits potential nerve damage in the long run. In order to perform the treatment so close to surgery, it requires that all cancer has been removed.

One of the latest treatment options for erectile dysfunction is focused shockwave therapy and EMTT, which are used at the MS Insight clinic.

  • Physical Activity
  • Vacuum pump
  • Shockwave/EMTT
  • Sex therapy
  • Stem cells (not offered at the clinic)
  • Injections/pills (not offered at the clinic)
  • Surgery (with pump implantation)

To give you a full picture of your health and identify potential risk factors, I offer an advanced body analysis with the InBody770 at your first treatment. This technology is among the most accurate and comprehensive tools for measuring body composition and provides valuable insights that can improve your treatment plan.

InBody770 analyzes several important parameters, including your body composition, muscle mass, body fat percentage, visceral fat (fat around the organs), and even the fluid content of your body. This detailed analysis gives us a clear picture of how your body is built and helps predict how you will respond to the shockwave treatment. By knowing the exact composition of your body, we can tailor the treatment to your specific needs and ensure you get the best possible results.

In addition to optimizing your treatment, InBody770 analysis can also be used to track your progress over time. If you decide to make lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet or increasing physical activity, we can track your body composition and see how these changes affect your erectile function and overall health. Follow-up measurements after treatment allow us to evaluate the effects of treatment and adjust your plan as needed so you can continue to improve your health and quality of life.

By including this advanced body analysis in your treatment, we ensure that all aspects of your health are taken into account. This holistic view of your body and health helps us find the underlying causes of your challenges and develop an effective and personalized plan that focuses not only on symptoms, but also on long-term health and wellness.

“Despite regular exercise, a healthy diet, and a consistently active sex life, I have experienced a gradual decline in my ability to achieve a proper and sustained erection as I’ve approached the age of fifty. In fact, that process probably began even earlier.

I’ve never really been a fan of pills, even though they provide an easy and effective short-term solution. I became curious when I read about Michael and MS Insight. I took the test and treated myself to a birthday gift by purchasing what, in my case, was the recommended 6 treatments.

You quickly get used to the non-invasive and completely painless shockwave treatment of the perineum and penis. The treatment doesn’t hurt, and you quickly get used to relaxing with the “tingling” waves from the shockwave machine.

If you can convince yourself that there’s not much difference between opening your mouth and taking off your pants in a private room with your therapist, then the experience is on par with a dental cleaning. Michael is very professional and has always handled my treatments and our time alone together in a pleasant and relaxed manner.

After my six treatments, I noticed a significant change in both my ability to achieve and the frequency of having a naturally strong erection. It’s nice when you wake up in the morning, and wonderful when you’re with your partner.

It’s been well worth the money for me, and I might very well go back in 5 or 10 years if I later lose the level of performance I’ve now regained.”
