Erectile dysfunction after stroke affects far more people than you might think. First and foremost because it’s a taboo we don’t talk about when it comes to stroke.

In 2020, I helped Birger Kjærbye with treatment of spasticity in muscles and erectile dysfunction after a stroke, due to a very high stress level over a long period of time.

When Birger had his stroke, he was already working on a film project about his businesses, but he decided to change it to follow his road back to life in his rehabilitation process in collaboration with Brain Cause.

Therefore, there is also footage from the clinic and the treatment of erectile dysfunction after stroke with shockwave and EMTT in the movie, which I am of course very happy about.

The recordings are from 2020, so a lot has happened in the clinic’s protocols, and the work with Birger also helped to further develop the treatment of erectile dysfunction as a result of complex neurological events, which means that the clinic today provides treatment second to none in the Nordic region in connection with complex erectile dysfunction.

The full, and very moving, broadcast about Birger’s road back on track can be seen below. It gets you thinking about life. Here you can also see what Birger says about his potency after the treatment with me, after a stroke. But as a teaser, he was very happy and satisfied with the result, it gave “little Birger” the journey back.

Erectile dysfunction after stroke - why it happens and what you can do

A stroke can have a significant impact on a man’s quality of life, including the ability to get and maintain an erection. Many men experience erectile dysfunction/erectile dysfunction after a stroke, but luckily there are various treatment options that can help you get back on track.

Why do men get strokes?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted, either due to a blood clot (ischemic stroke) or a bleed in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). There are several risk factors that increase the likelihood of having a stroke, including:

  • High blood pressure – The biggest risk factor for stroke as it can weaken blood vessels and increase the risk of blood clots.

  • Diabetes – Increases the risk of atherosclerosis and blood clots, which can lead to stroke.

  • High cholesterol – Can lead to plaque buildup in the arteries, which can block the blood supply to the brain.

  • Smoking – Damages blood vessels and increases the risk of blood clots.

  • Overweight and inactive lifestyle – Increases the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, all of which can lead to both post-stroke and pre-stroke erectile dysfunction.

  • Heart disease – For example, atrial fibrillation, which can lead to blood clots that can travel to the brain.

  • Excessive alcohol consumption – Can contribute to high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat, increasing the risk of stroke.

  • Chronic stress – Prolonged stress can increase blood pressure, lead to unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking and poor diet, as well as increase the risk of cardiovascular disease that can result in a stroke.

Why does erectile dysfunction occur after a stroke?

A stroke can damage the areas of the brain that control sexual function, blood circulation and nerves, which can lead to erectile dysfunction and lack of control over urination as well. It’s not always simple, but some of the most common causes include:

  • Reduced blood flow – Stroke can affect blood vessels, making it harder to get enough blood to the penis.

  • Nerve damage – If nerves involved in erection have been damaged, signals from the brain to the penis can be weakened or interrupted.

  • Hormonal changes – Stroke can affect hormone balance, including T levels, which can reduce libido and the ability to get an erection.

  • Psychological factors – Depression, anxiety and low self-esteem after a stroke can also play a big role in the development of ED.

Treatment options after stroke in the clinic

Fortunately, there are several treatments that can help men with erectile dysfunction after a stroke:

  • Shockwave therapy – An effective treatment method that stimulates blood circulation and tissue regeneration in the penis to improve erectile function naturally.

  • EMTT treatment -The treatment affects the nervous system and provides flow to reconnect the brain, pelvic floor and penis.

  • Nesa X – Helps reduce the body’s overall stress level and stimulates the vagus nerve.

  • Psychological support – Talking to a therapist or sexologist can help manage the emotional and mental challenges that come with ED after a stroke.

  • Lifestyle changes – Healthy eating, regular exercise and quitting smoking can improve overall health and increase the chances of regaining erectile function.
